Homeowner Story

A Family’s Story of Homeownership in Fairmount Heights

As a part of the City of Newark’s Abandoned Property Initiative in Fairmount Heights, parents Joseph and Esther and their son Benjamin fulfilled their dream of homeownership when they purchased a newly-renovated house in 2012.  Greater Newark Housing Partnership recently interviewed the parents and their son to learn about their experience as homeowners and what they would say to other people considering homeownership in Fairmount Heights.

Did you think you’d ever own a home?
JosephYes, eventually.  We were saving money.  We expected to buy in three years, but when this opportunity came and we went for it.  We bought the house at a good price and we’ll own it outright in just eight years!

What has your experience been as homeowner?
Benjamin: When we were in a rented house, we couldn’t do much, so now that I have my own room, I can do whatever I want without messing it up.
Joseph:  Purchasing the home was a blessing.  It’s been good for us to move here-good for the community and good for bringing up our son’s self-esteem.  We have a nice front and backyard, driveway and wonderful neighbors.
We’re looking to live here for years to come.
Esther:  The last time we rented, we said that our next move would be into our very own home.  That was our prayer and God answered it.

Why Newark?  It is worth it?
Esther:  We didn’t want to live here in Newark, but when we went through a homeowner’s course, the instructor told us that Newark is developing, improving and would make a good investment.  That solidified our decision.
JosephAnd, overall, the investment has been worth it.  With the exception of a few garbage cans being stolen, there have been no break-ins or vandalism.  We haven’t had any problems and we like it here.  The neighbors look out for each other.  From what we’ve experienced it’s a good neighborhood that could eventually be a great one.

What would say to someone who’s hesitant to buy in Fairmount Heights?
Joseph:   Based on our experience, if someone was looking to stay in the city, I’d advise them to do it.  Buying a home is maintaining property, it’s an appreciating asset and you’re building equity.  If you rent, you’re flushing money down the toilet.  And, if you decide to not stay here after a while you could possibly sell.
Esther:  And Newark gives a lot of help and resources-the $10,000 grant that pays for closing costs and down payment assistance, for example. Buying a house is a lot of paperwork, a process, but well worth it.  Buying a home is cheaper than renting. We were paying more in rent than we’re paying for our mortgage.

What would you say to someone who’s concerned about the neighborhood’s safety?
Esther:  I would tell them to look at the bigger picture because a community is not always going to be same.  Newark is not the same way it was ten years ago.
Joseph I would advise a prospective homeowner to talk to the neighbors, drive around, park for a little while and look to see what’s going on.  And, of course, I would tell them our experience has been great, no break-ins, no vandalism, everyone seems to be nice, even the kids are nice.  If they’re interested, check it out.  If they like it, then invest.

Any final words?
Esther and JosephWe’ve had a good experience with John from Fairmount Heights Development Company. He’s supportive and helpful.  Whatever needed to be done he did it without an attitude or questions.  You can tell that John is not just looking to make money-he cares about the neighborhood and people who buy the homes.
